What is AI search optimization, and does it work for local businesses?
Updated 2026-11-06 by the White Pine Web Design team
Short answer: AI search optimization, also called GEO or AEO, means working to get your business mentioned when people ask tools like ChatGPT or Google's AI who to hire. It overlaps with solid website and Google profile work, but as of November 2026 we found no independent controlled study showing it causes more leads for local businesses.
AI search optimization, also called GEO or AEO, means working to get your business mentioned when people ask tools like ChatGPT or Google's AI who to hire. It overlaps with solid website and Google profile work. But as of November 2026, we found no independent controlled study showing it causes more leads for local businesses.
What do GEO and AEO actually mean?
GEO stands for generative engine optimization, and AEO stands for answer engine optimization. They mean nearly the same thing. An AI tool writes an answer rather than handing you a list of links, and these services try to get your business into that answer.
Google's view is that this isn't a separate field. Its guide says that from Google Search's perspective, optimizing for generative AI search is still SEO.
What does the evidence show?
Here's what we could find, with the limits of each source. Much of it comes from companies that sell related tools.
| Question | What the data says | The limit |
|---|---|---|
| Do AI tools mention local businesses as often as Maps? | Maps mentioned a tracked business in 66% of searches, against 32% to 38% on AI tools | BrightLocal sells a tracker, and the study covers mentions, not leads |
| Are the answers stable? | Repeat runs overlapped only about 20% to 33%, though businesses often reappeared | Same study |
| Do the same lists repeat? | Less than a 1 in 100 chance of the same brand list twice | SparkToro's prompts weren't local service searches |
| How much traffic do they send? | 0.28% of web traffic across 74,752 sites in March 2026 | Ahrefs sells SEO tools, and calls after an AI chat may not show up |
| Are those calls any good? | 49% of ChatGPT-referred calls became leads, the highest of any channel | Invoca's own customers, and it says volume remains very low |
| Is it taking over local search? | AI Overviews on 15% of local queries, local packs on 93% | Whitespark data reported by Entrepreneur. We didn't read the original report, and other summaries differ |
So does it work for local businesses?
The honest answer is that nobody has proved it yet. We found no independent controlled study showing that GEO work causes more leads for local businesses. A controlled study would compare similar businesses with and without the work, and we couldn't find one. That doesn't mean it never helps. It means anyone claiming a proven lift should show you how they know.
The closest thing to a practical signal is about sources. In BrightLocal's study of about 200,000 local searches, business websites made up 42% of citations and Google Business Profiles made up 28.5%. So the things that help you on Google are also what these tools read. That's an overlap, not proof of cause.
What should a local business do first?
We'd work in this order, since each step is useful with or without AI:
- Get your Google Business Profile complete and accurate.
- Make your website say plainly what you do, where you do it and what it costs, if you can share that.
- Answer the questions customers actually ask, on your own pages.
- Earn real reviews, following the rules.
- Track calls and forms, and ask new customers how they found you.
- Then, if you're curious, measure how often AI tools mention you.
What can you safely skip?
Google's guide says you don't need special AI text files such as llms.txt, or any special markup, to appear in its results. It also says you don't need to rewrite your content just for AI systems. Having an llms.txt file is harmless, and other services may read one, but it isn't worth paying extra for.
Be wary of anyone reporting your "rank in ChatGPT." Because answers change from run to run, one check tells you very little. SparkToro's research suggests that how often you appear across many runs is a more reasonable number than your position in one answer.
How much should it cost?
The prices are all over the place as of November 2026. WebFX lists $1,500 to $5,000 a month for small business GEO strategy. Meanwhile, a national trades provider lists GEO inside a $249 a month plan, and Durable advertises GEO in a website plan that costs far less. We can't tell you what's actually delivered at each price.
Plenty of owners are working on this. BrightLocal's 2026 report found 65% of small businesses say they're working on AI visibility. Still, for a typical local business, we'd have a hard time justifying a large monthly bill for this alone, given how small the traffic is and how thin the proof is. A larger company with more at stake may see it differently.
What should you ask anyone selling it?
- How many times do you run each question, and on which tools?
- Will you report the misses as well as the hits?
- How will you connect this to actual calls and leads?
- What will you do besides send me a report?
- What's the contract length, and can I leave?
What do we offer?
Our team has more than two years of in-depth work with large language models, the technology behind these tools. That helps us understand why answers change. It doesn't let us control them, and no one else can either, so we don't guarantee mentions in AI answers.
We offer a one-time AI search visibility report for $195. We ask the same questions many times over, then show how often you appear and who appears instead. AI search tracking is also part of our Growth plan at $595 a month, along with Google profile and local SEO work. We report the misses too.
Our company is new, and we don't have published client results yet. So we can't offer you proof of our own, only a straight method.
What's a good next step?
Read how we handle this on our AI search page, or see the prices on our price list. If you're a trade or service business, you may want to start with the basics on our trades page first. When you're ready, ask for a fixed price.
Common questions
What is GEO?
GEO stands for generative engine optimization. It means working to get your business mentioned in answers written by AI tools like ChatGPT and Google's AI.
Does AI search optimization work for local businesses?
It isn't proven. As of November 2026 we found no independent controlled study showing that GEO work causes more leads for local businesses, though the websites and Google profiles these tools read also help on Google.
Do I need an llms.txt file?
Not for Google. Google's guide says you don't need special AI text files or markup to appear in its results. It's harmless to have one, but we wouldn't pay extra for it.
Can anyone guarantee my business shows up in ChatGPT?
No. Answers change from run to run, and no one controls them. A better measure is how often you appear across many runs of the same question.
How much does an AI search report cost?
Our one-time AI search visibility report is $195. AI search tracking is also included in our Growth plan at $595 a month.
